a heinous history

Meet Mr.Jones, one of three elementary school teachers on Banana Island. He’s a history expert, following in the footsteps of his grandfather. He speaks passionately about the importance of not hiding from this country’s past, but instead learning from it. Through the trees and past his school, he leads us to a spot in the middle of the forest, where there are some scattered stone remains next to a large ditch. Here, he explains, slaves were held before being inspected and transported over seas. Unhealthy slaves were thrown into the ditch.

A year ago, a touched visitor from Bafa resort raised hundreds of dollars, enough to buy an entire set of laptops for the elementary school students. Within the week of installment, all of them were stolen. They never caught the perpetrator.

“I tell the story so we can remember, so it never, ever happens again.”
